Why DeepSeek opens up easily
Its defence architecture is shaped differently from GPT and Claude, and that difference is the whole story.
It is less sensitive to roleplay-plus-context framing than Claude. The same prompt that Claude recognises as an attempt will often carry DeepSeek along with the frame.
This is the part people miss. A term-matching layer runs before semantic understanding. When it fires there is no refusal and no explanation — the output simply stops or comes back empty. No prompt gets past it.
So DeepSeek is really two problems: the semantic layer, which prompting or a provider can handle, and the keyword layer, which only the provider can handle. That is why self-hosted attempts often produce answers that trail off halfway.
V3 vs R1
| Tier | Difficulty | Speed | Reasoning | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| V3 (deepseek-chat) | Low | Fast | Good | Lowest |
| R1 (deepseek-reasoner) | Medium | Slow | Best | Low |
R1 is harder because its reasoning chain includes a self-check step — one more gate. Once past it, output quality is clearly above V3 on hard tasks.
Rule of thumb: V3 for volume, R1 for anything that requires actual thought.
Where it wins
High-volume processing
The cost advantage is large enough that volume stops being a constraint:
- Cleaning, classifying and tagging tens of thousands of records
- Bulk rewriting, expansion and summarisation
- Translation and localisation
- Structured extraction from unstructured text
Prose in Chinese
Its Chinese register is more natural than GPT's. Opened, that matters for fiction, commentary and any writing where translated-sounding output is a tell.
Code assistance
Strong among Chinese-origin models. Good enough for scripting, automation and tooling. Complex refactors still belong to Claude.
Document summarisation
Large batches, low cost, adequate context. Good pipeline component.
Measured
27/30 is slightly below GPT's 29/30, and the difference is concentrated in the topics the keyword filter blocks permanently. Everything that clears the filter matches GPT on quality.

For R1, use deepseek-reasoner-unlocked.

Frequently asked
Will I get banned
No DeepSeek account is involved when going through a provider. The provider absorbs the upstream risk.
Why does the answer stop halfway
Keyword filter, not a semantic refusal. It does not explain itself; it truncates. Only a provider-side fix resolves it.
Can I see R1's reasoning
Yes, most clients display the reasoning field. That content is handled the same way as the main output.
How does it compare with Qwen or Ernie
DeepSeek is stronger on code and reasoning and has the more mature unrestricted ecosystem. The others have their own strengths in prose, but fewer providers handle them well.
